Wow this year has certainly thrown us some curveballs and made us reconsider how we operate as businesses.  It looks like remote working is going to be the new normal for many people for the foreseeable future.

Whilst this is going to lead to many positive changes including improvements in work/life balance, it’s going to be much harder for businesses to manage and motivate their teams.  Plus there are obvious implications when it comes to new starters, because they won’t have the immediate benefits of being immersed in the company culture within the office environment.

With Christmas looming, it’s important for businesses to think about how they’re going to recognise and reward their teams and build the company culture through online communications.  We’ve got a few ideas that may help:-

“People work for money but go the extra mile for recognition, praise and rewards.” –Dale Carnegie, Leadership Training Guru.

Christmas Decs Delivery & Christmas Party – How about sending every member of your team a box of decorations that they can use to decorate their home office space and maybe some extra accessories that they can use for a Zoom Chrimbo party – party hats and streamers and maybe even a company branded bottle of bubbly for raising a glass together.

Host an Awards Ceremony – Some of the biggest award ceremonies have had to go virtual this year, so there’s nothing stopping you putting on a Zoom event to recognise your team.  Everyone brings something to the party so it’s imperative that you recognise each person for their contribution.  You could even post out the awards beforehand and get the team to open them live at the event.  Dependent on the culture of the business you could go with serious awards such as Employee of the Year, or you could make it more entertaining with ‘The Office Mum/Dad Award’ or a ‘Most likely to extend meetings award’…

A Personalised Word Cloud – You could make everyone in the team feel valued by asking their colleagues to list 3 or 4 positive words about them.  You could then build these into a word cloud and send a framed print as a special Christmas gift

A Branded Box of Goodies – Bring your team together on Zoom with a selection of branded goodies.  From tea mugs through to branded banners that they can display in the background, it all serves to reinforce your business and its core values.  You could even go the extra mile and personalise them.

We’ve got so many other ideas but it could become a very long blog – so these are just a few to get your creative juices flowing.

Employees may forget what you said or what they earned as a reward. But they would never forget how you made them feel. Thus your focus should be on making them feel valued and appreciated during these challenging times.
